Why This Paddle Is Different

Most paddles follow traditional square designs. The Thunder AXE Infinity breaks the Status Quo on paddle design bringing  new thinking for pickleball  paddle design.
With a redesigned aerodynamic shape and triple air-channel system, it reduces drag and improves swing speed — giving you faster reactions and better control at the kitchen and mid court resets.

Spin Technology — SoftPlex Surface

The Thunder AXE uses our proprietary SoftPlex surface, designed to create a tactile “grip” on the ball rather than relying on a sand or particle grit that wears off very quickly.
Our Softplex rubbr surface allows the paddle to generate strong, consistent spin — similar to high-performance table tennis paddles — without surface wear over time.

Why the Thunder AXE Costs More

The Thunder AXE Infinity is built with advanced expensive materials like raw 3K carbon, 3X Superheated or  thermoformed construction, and a hand sanded triple air-channel aerodynamic design. All the decals and trim are applied meticulously by hand. Not silkscreened or mass printed. Each paddle is built up and formed strip by strip of carbon around the core by hand. No edgeguards to fall off . We provide two clear  protector tapes to protect your perfomance weapon.
Unlike many brands, KOBO invests in engineering and performance rather than expensive Pro  endorsements — delivering next-generation performance where it matters most.

FAQs | KOBO Thunder AXE Infinity

Design & Engineering

What makes the Thunder AXE Infinity different from traditional pickleball paddles?
It uses an 18mm triple-air-channel core, raw 3K carbon fiber face, and race-inspired aerodynamic shaping for higher speed and stability.

Why does the Thunder AXE Infinity look more like a performance machine?
Because its geometry, textures, and materials are shaped by engineered aerodynamic principles into its unusual ergonomic design.

Why is the Thunder AXE Infinity 18mm thick?
The 18mm thickness increases control, dwell time, and forgiveness while maintaining confident power. It's ideal advanced and competitive players looking for a unique edge.

Does Thunder AXE Infinity use a grit surface?
No. The paddle uses raw 3K carbon enhanced with SoftPlex™ coating. SoftPlex™ provides grip and tactile soft rubber feel without relying on grit (sand), ensuring longer-lasting performance.

How does Thunder AXE Infinity feel compared to TeslaPlaid?
Thunder AXE Infinity offers a softer, more controlled feel due to its 18mm core and SoftPlex™ coating, while TeslaPlaid delivers a firmer, traditional raw-carbon response.

How does the Thunder AXE generate spin without grit?
The Thunder AXE uses our proprietary SoftPlex surface, which creates a tactile grip on the ball instead of relying on rough textures. This allows the paddle to grab the ball at impact and generate strong, consistent spin — similar to high-performance table tennis paddles — without surface wear over time.

Why does the Thunder AXE Infinity cost more?
The Thunder AXE Infinity is not a traditional paddle — it's a complete rethinking of paddle design. Unlike conventional paddles, this model was developed through a performance-first engineering approach, combining insights from aerospace design, advanced materials, and real player feedback to push beyond the limits of traditional shapes.

  • 🔬 Triple Air-Channel Design — Reduces drag and swing weight for faster hands and improved maneuverability — a design rarely seen in traditional paddles.
  • 🔬 Unibody Thermoformed Construction — Enhances structural integrity, energy transfer, and overall durability.
  • 🔬 Raw 3K Carbon Face + SoftPlex Surface — Delivers consistent spin and control without relying on surface grit that wears down over time.
  • 🔬 Optimized Aerodynamic Shape — Engineered for speed, balance, and responsiveness — not just aesthetics.
  • 🔬 Engineering Over Endorsements — Instead of spending on professional sponsorships, KOBO invests directly into product innovation and material development.

🧠 The Real Difference
Most paddles are iterations of existing designs. The Thunder AXE Infinity is built from the ground up to deliver:

  • 👉 Faster reaction time
  • 👉 More controlled power
  • 👉 Consistent performance over time

💡 What You're Paying For
You're not paying for a logo or endorsements — you're investing in next-generation paddle engineering and performance.

Construction

What is the 3-air-channel core and why does it matter?
Three internal air channels redistribute impact energy, keep the paddle light, decrease drag  and increase paddle speed during high-speed play.

How does the SoftPlex semi-transparent coating affect feel?
It softens impact and grips the ball for better feel, giving power shots control and touch shots precision.

Performance

Is the Thunder AXE Infinity a power or control paddle?
It's a true hybrid—engineered to deliver explosive power without sacrificing accuracy or forgiveness. In summary it's both a power and control paddle. It is not overly "Poppy" it will keep your balls in and not flying out.

How does aerodynamics improve on-court performance?
Reduced drag allows faster swing speed, quicker reactions at the net, and less weight and fatigue over long matches.

Spin & Touch

How does raw 3K carbon fiber improve spin?
Raw 3K carbon's weave maintains surface strength longer, producing consistent power throughout the life of the paddle.

Why does the ball feel like it stays on the paddle longer?
The 18mm core, 3K carbon and SoftPlex coating work harmoniously together to increase dwell time for better control and placement.

Comparison

KOBO Thunder AXE Infinity vs. Selkirk TeslaPlaid
What's the difference between Thunder AXE Infinity and TeslaPlaid?
The Thunder AXE Infinity is built with a unibody thermoformed structure and an aerodynamic design with triple air channels, resulting in faster swing speed, lighter feel, and more consistent stability across the face. If a ball hits the air channel with the 3 flat bars in the air-channel, a ball hit in this area will still be able to be returned.

The Selkirk TeslaPlaid uses a traditional layered construction with a foam core and raw carbon surface with a large air-channel where if a ball hits it, it may mishit. It is known for strong spin performance. Its design is light and will need to have extra weight added.

Bottom line:
Thunder AXE Infinity favors speed, stability, and more functional futuristic aerodynamic shape and engineering.
TeslaPlaid favors traditional raw carbon spin with a clunkier Tesla truck hard lines design.

KOBO Thunder AXE Infinity vs. Selkirk BoomStik
How does Thunder AXE Infinity compare to the Selkirk BoomStik?
The Thunder AXE Infinity uses a unibody thermoformed construction, aerodynamic edgeless design, and three integrated air channels to reduce swing weight and improve hand speed and control.

The Selkirk BoomStik is built around Selkirk's BoomCore™ foam core with an EVA power ring, delivering explosive power and a large sweet spot. However, it does not use unibody thermoforming or an aerodynamic air-channel design. It has a  wide plastic edgeguard that is publicly documented online to come loose easily after a short time of use.

Bottom line:
Thunder AXE Infinity delivers faster swing speed, refined control, and structural consistency.
BoomStik delivers foam-core power and a more explosive, power-forward response in a traditionally designed square shaped paddle with edgeguard.

KOBO Paddle Care & Maintenance Guide

Protect Your Investment

Your KOBO paddle is precision engineered to deliver exceptional performance and durability. Proper care helps maintain its appearance, preserve its performance and maximize its service life. Whether you own the Thunder AXE Infinity or another KOBO paddle, following these care recommendations will help ensure years of reliable play.

Before Every Match

Before stepping onto the court, take a few moments to inspect your paddle:

  • Check the paddle face for cracks, chips or unusual damage.
  • Ensure the edge protection tape is securely attached.
  • Confirm the grip is clean, dry and firmly attached.
  • If you notice unusual rattling, loose components or structural damage, discontinue use and contact KOBO Customer Support.

A quick inspection before every match helps identify potential issues early and keeps your paddle performing at its best.

Daily Care

After every playing session:

  • Wipe the paddle face with a clean microfiber cloth to remove ball residue, dust and dirt.
  • If necessary, lightly dampen the cloth with clean water.
  • Dry the paddle completely before storing.
  • Store the paddle inside the supplied KOBO paddle cover whenever it is not in use.

A few seconds of routine care after each game helps keep your paddle performing at its best.

Cleaning Your Paddle

The carbon fiber face requires very little maintenance.

For normal cleaning:

  • Use a soft microfiber cloth.
  • Use clean water or a paddle cleaner specifically designed for carbon fiber pickleball paddles.
  • Dry the paddle completely before storing.

Never use:

  • Magic Erasers
  • Abrasive pads
  • Steel wool
  • Acetone
  • Paint thinner
  • Bleach
  • Alcohol-based solvents
  • Household cleaners containing harsh chemicals

These products can permanently damage the textured playing surface and decorative finish.

Carbon Fiber Face Care

The raw carbon fiber face is engineered to provide consistent spin and ball control. After normal play you may notice:

  • Ball marks
  • Light discoloration
  • Surface polishing in high-contact areas

These are normal cosmetic signs of use and do not affect paddle performance.

Never sand, polish or refinish the hitting surface.

Protecting the Textured Surface

The textured carbon fiber surface is one of the most important performance features of your paddle. To preserve maximum spin:

  • Never use abrasive cleaners.
  • Never scrape the paddle face with hard objects.
  • Never attempt to polish the hitting surface.

Proper cleaning is all that is required.

Edge Protection Tape

Every Thunder AXE includes two complimentary KOBO Edge Protection Tapes. The tape is designed to:

  • Protect the paddle edge from cosmetic wear.
  • Reduce damage caused by normal court contact.
  • Help maintain the paddle's appearance.

Replace the tape whenever it becomes worn or damaged.

Important: Edge protection tape helps reduce cosmetic wear only. It cannot prevent damage caused by severe impacts, dropping the paddle or striking hard objects.

Edge protection tape is considered a consumable accessory and is not covered under warranty.

How to Apply KOBO Edge Protection Tape

How to Remove & Reapply KOBO Edge Protection Tape

Paddle Cover

Every Thunder AXE includes a custom KOBO paddle cover. Always use the cover during storage and transportation. The cover helps protect against:

  • Scratches
  • Dust
  • UV exposure
  • Minor impacts during transport

Avoid placing heavy objects on top of the covered paddle.

Grip Care

Grip performance naturally decreases with regular use. To maximize grip life:

  • Keep the grip clean and dry.
  • Allow the grip to air dry after playing in humid conditions.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to moisture.
  • Replace the grip when it becomes smooth, slippery or excessively worn.

Replacing a worn grip restores comfort and control.

Temperature Protection

Extreme temperatures are one of the leading causes of paddle damage. Never leave your paddle:

  • Inside a parked vehicle.
  • In direct sunlight for extended periods.
  • Near heaters or fireplaces.
  • Inside freezing vehicles overnight.

Excessive heat may weaken the bonding materials used during manufacturing. Extreme cold may reduce impact resistance. For best performance, store your paddle between 10°C and 30°C (50°F–86°F).

Water & Moisture

KOBO paddles are designed for outdoor play but should never be submerged in water. If your paddle becomes wet:

  • Dry it immediately.
  • Allow it to air dry completely before placing it inside the paddle cover.

Avoid prolonged exposure to heavy rain or standing water.

Transportation

When transporting your paddle:

  • Always use the supplied paddle cover.
  • Avoid placing heavy equipment on top of the paddle.
  • Protect it from sharp impacts during travel.
  • Avoid dropping the paddle onto hard surfaces.

Although KOBO paddles are built for durability, unnecessary impacts can shorten the life of any performance paddle.

Court Contact

Occasional light contact with the court during play is normal. Repeated scraping or striking concrete, asphalt, fences, benches or walls may cause cosmetic or structural damage.

Edge protection tape helps reduce cosmetic wear but cannot prevent damage from significant impacts.

Long-Term Storage

If storing your paddle for several weeks or longer:

  • Clean the paddle thoroughly.
  • Store it inside the paddle cover.
  • Keep it in a cool, dry location.
  • Avoid damp basements or hot garages.
  • Do not place heavy objects on top of the paddle.

Proper storage helps maintain long-term performance.

Normal Wear

The following are considered normal wear and are not manufacturing defects:

  • Ball marks
  • Minor scratches
  • Small paint chips
  • Cosmetic edge wear
  • Grip wear
  • Worn edge protection tape
  • Minor surface polishing from repeated ball contact

These cosmetic changes are expected with regular play.

What Is Not Covered Under Warranty

The KOBO Limited Warranty does not cover damage caused by:

  • Abuse or misuse.
  • Intentional impacts.
  • Striking fences, walls or hard objects.
  • Excessive heat.
  • Improper storage.
  • Unauthorized modifications.
  • Normal cosmetic wear.

I’ve had my Pickleball paddle for almost 2 weeks and it’s awesome. Great spin on my serves and returns. That paddle can grip the ball and and spin like never before I’ve seen. I’ve let my friends try it out and they are amazed what this paddle can do. It looks beautiful and different from any other paddle. It’s worth the price. Thanks KOBO for improving my game.

Hi Richard Thanks for taking the time to post how the THUNDER AXE plays for you and what your friends have also experienced when they try the THUNDER AXE. Great to hear it has made improvements to your game. Thats the idea with the paddle being so different that it actually does look and play different. Welcome to Club Kobo! Get On it!

RICHARD ILLESCAS

The KOBO Thunder X offers a well-balanced combination of pop, power, and control that perfectly suits my playing preference. Its eye-catching design is definitely a head-turner on the court. However, the surface grip did not fully meet my expectations, especially for my spin-serving style. I hope KOBO can improve the paddle’s texture to make it more grippy—similar to table tennis rubber—so it can generate even higher RPM and heavier spin.

Richard Thanks for the review. I am not sure why your serve isnt as spinny with the THUNDER AXE surface. The technology we use is exactly like a Table tennis surface its called SOFTplex and when feel it it seems smooth but when put force on it grabs the ball and creates spin. Glad you like all the other fetaures of the paddle.

L
Larry Powers

It’s a. Very good paddle with lots of control and power. I like the weight of it. It’s much lighter than any other paddle I have used.

Hi Larry The THUNDER AXE although slightly thicker than some most paddles is surprisingly light because of the side cuts and Air-Channels it cuts the weight out as well as making the swing thru quicker. When you hit the ball the paddle is solid and has a nice softer feeling ,not poppy, but when you hit the 'G-Spot' sweet spot with a nice solid full swing you have lots of power. The duracore and softplex control for ball accuracy helps to improve peoples games

Debra S Grimsley

This is a game changer! I hesitated paying that much but thought I’d try it since could return if just another paddle! No vibrations and banger balks at kitchen line:). Lightweight. Good grip. Smooth swings! I sound like a paid opinion but it really is a game changer for me. Everyone who saw it at the Club had to hold it:)

Hi Debra Thanks so much for letting potential players to know about your new THUNDER AXE experience. We have about 20% women players but we need to have more experience it and play with the unique and different feeling THUNDER AXE. let us know if you want to become an affiliate and have a promo code for potential buyers or if you would like to do a Video review.

Robert J Burkhalter

It took a little more time, than advertised, to reach me. However, it was probably worth the wait. I've used it about 16 to 20 games now. I like the feel, weight and response of the paddle. I'm getting more impressed the more I use it. It does get the face of the paddle a little dirty from the dirt off the ball, but it comes off with a little dampness applied with a cloth. It will be interesting to see how long the surface lasts as well as how the paddle holds up to all of the play. So far, so good!

Robert thanks for taking the time to putup the review When we are out of stock of the THUNDER AXE in our U.S Los Angeles logistic center we had to ship from China . Now we are airfrieghting in shipments every other day to the U.S logistic centre . The paddles should be geting to people quicker now. It does take time to adjust to this paddle. Long term it will help your game . give you more precision , more in balls , more low balls. When at the baseline you must folow through with your stroke. You can't have an open paddle face with this paddle when you hit in the sweet spot , it has a trampoline effect for power, you must have top spin to bring it back down with your follow through stroke. To clean . do not use runner paddle cleaners, micro fiber towel with water will wipe it clean. Do not use detergents or chemicals which might react with our Softplex Nano technology surface.

Still getting used to it! But , like it

Brian thanks for the review . It takes time to adjust. Use more of a full stroke at the baseline and top spin and on serves with a big follow through over your shoulder on forehands. Loosen your grip mid court and at the kitchen line and let the paddle absorb the opposing hit with the solid 18mm Duracore and redirect to the open space with light accurate returns.

Absolutely love this paddle. It is crazy quick at the kitchen line and amazing accurate. I am a recreational picklballer and this paddle has advanced my playing ability quite a bit.

Michael
Thanks for the review. So glad you mentioned that you are a rec player and that it has helped to 'advance your playing ability quite a bit'. Thats the THUNDER AXE's hidden secret . quick and 'amazing accuracy' from the combination of the thicker Duracore and the softplex surface to grab the ball and change its direction to where you want it to go.

If you are working at leveling up . it can only help, not hinder your game like some overly poppy powerful paddles.

Amazing paddle, great control touch, and power when you need it.

It has great control. But I would love to see it has more power as well.

Roy
Thanks for taking the time to review. The THUNDER AXE has a hidden Super charge power button . You have to hit it on the 'G-spot' to get the Climatic screaming power.
Take a little bit more backswing on your forehand stroke and accentutate your follow through over your shoulder in a upper winshield wiper swing over your shoulder. When you have a chance drill buy telling yourself to look at the ball until you can see the ball make contact with the paddle . you see it hit with your eyes. if you hit off centre you will get a unusual solid feel from the paddle. thats the outer edge not the G-Spot Sweet spot . So thats what you need to focus on. When you hit it on the G-Spot with more swing up over your shoulder and top spin it will have lots of power. try new Stroke coach app coming soon . Excellent paddle surface, great feel, and control. Backhand wrist shots and not as demanding on my forearm tendon with the light weight of this paddle.

Like any new paddle it took a little while to get used to but once I added some weights on the edges I have been playing very well with it.

Daniel We apreciate your review and idea to add weight to custom adjust it. The THUNDER AXE is actully lightweight at 8.0 oz many paddles are stock 8.4, 8.5 ounces. We make it light because its easy to add weight but you can't take off weight .So if you need more power the weight idea is great way to instantly make the THUNDER AXE into a powerhouse by adding .5 to whatever weight you need up to an extra oz.

I've been playing with the Kobo Thunder Axe for a little while now, and I couldn't be happier with it. I don't usually bother writing long reviews, but this one really lived up to the hype, so here we are.

First off, the feel. It's surprisingly lightweight, like "did they forget to put something inside this?" light, and I kept waiting for the catch where light means no power. Never came. My wrist thanks me after a long session instead of filing a formal complaint. The handle is a big part of that too. It's a really good size, comfortable, and just sits naturally in your hand. Even the grip tape it ships with is high quality. I usually expect factory grips to feel cheap and turn into confetti after a month, but I haven't had the slightest urge to replace this one.

Now, how it plays. The control is ridiculous. I can put the ball wherever I want, like there's a tiny GPS hidden in the face, and it makes resetting feel way easier than it has any right to. Those scrambly "oh no, they're attacking me" moments where I used to panic and pop it up? Now I just calmly drop it into the kitchen like I planned it the whole time. (I did not plan it. The paddle did.)

The spin is fantastic too. I'm getting way more action on the ball than I ever did with my old paddle, the kind of curve that makes opponents stop and stare at the paddle like it cheated.

Power comes with one small catch: it's incredibly powerful, if you hit dead center. Nail the sweet spot and the ball absolutely flies, with this pop so satisfying it should be a ringtone. Miss the sweet spot, and it gently reminds you to go work on your form.

A few other nice touches. The design looks sharp and stands out without being obnoxious, that "yeah, I know what I'm doing" energy, even on days when I very much do not. Kobo also throws in a really nice cover plus a bonus edge guard, which normally I'd have to buy separately, then forget to buy, then chip the edge and cry about. So that's a genuine win.

And a quick shoutout to customer support. I had to reach out at one point, and they were fast, friendly, and helpful, which these days feels about as rare as a unicorn.

Lastly, price. Yes, it is not cheap, but so it isn't your Venti Iced half-coconut, half-oat milk Matcha Latte with 1.5 pumps of sugar-free vanilla, 4 scoops of matcha, double-blended with only 3 ice cubes, topped with Strawberry Purée Sweet Cream Cold Foam, you order everyday and costs you 2 paddles worth of cash every month.
So, give your blood sugar levels a break for a month and get the paddle that will make you play better.

Overall, it's a fantastic paddle. Light, controlled, spinny, powerful when it counts, comfy, good looking, and backed by humans who care. My only real problem now is that when I shank a shot, I know for a fact I can't blame my equipment anymore. Highly recommend giving it a try. Just get off the fence already, the fence is not going to improve your dinking.

Wow Vin, This really sums up what we think about the THUNDER AXE that we have never really been able to put in words until you just did. Thank you so much for taking the time to give such a thorough and passionate review. 'Its incredibly powerful when you hit the sweet spot and if you don't it reminds you to work on your form' love that!

Took some time getting used to, but it is a very nice paddle and I think it’s my new go toe paddle

That is true it takes a few games or even a few days to adjust and let the paddle show you how it keeps balls low on resets and in 'Just in' on power shots rather than 'Just out'

This paddle has given me confidence on the court. Very forgiving but powerful at the same time. I get a lot of curiosities about the look of the paddle but in a good way.

Rod There is a lot of contravercy about wether the THUNDER AXE is a power paddle or a control paddle . People who play it know it has lots of power when you need it...but its not too POPPY powerful that you are poping balls up or hitting out. the forgiving means it resets and feels good when someon else on the opponents side is hiting you with smash or pwer shot you can soften the return and keep low with the thicker 18mm core

No one has a paddle like this. Looking for a paddle that will give you an advantage in your singles game?

You have now found it!

CJ yes the THUNDER AXE could help a singles player because they can take big strokes with minimum drag and the paddle has great reach. It is a very good Doubles paddle as it is super fast in fire fights and can keep resets low and has power and control . Thanks for the review!
